I have an old blog with a lot of posts and links to places that don’t exist anymore, which creates a 404 error. I have been using the Broken Link Checker plugin to help me find these broken links.

Broken links are bad for SEO and you might inadvertently be linking to bad neighbourhoods if those old sites have been bought and redirected.

Broken Link Checker keeps a running list of all
the broken links found in your posts, pages, blogroll, comments, and
custom fields. It also allows you to easily manage those links from
one screen within the WordPress admin.

The plugin has many more features:

  • Monitor links in your posts, pages, the blogroll, and custom fields
  • Detects links that don’t work and missing images
  • Dashboard updates for broken links
  • Redirected link detection
  • Changes appearance of broken links in posts; the default is to set the text decoration to strike through
  • New or editted posts are checked immediately
  • Managed through the WordPress Admin under the Tools -> Broken Links
  • Links can be removed or changed through the plugin’s page, without manually editing each post

In order to fix these broken links, you can go into each individual post and replace the broken links with new urls that work. Alternatively, you can use the redirection plugin.

You can find out where your broken links are from your Google Webmasters account too.

Just watched this and it is reminded me of what it really is like to be an entrepreneur.

I was answering a question on a forum about adsense payouts and why this person who had a site at position #1 for his keyword and still did not make very much money.

There can be several reason for this:

What is the Adwords CPC for this keyword? This will be the starting point for getting a rough idea of how much you will get paid and it is usually a percentage of around 50% but this is dependent on many other factors which has not been disclosed.

How much traffic is this site getting and is it targetted traffic.

Place of the adsense ads is important too, is it in the hot spots of the site that gets maximum click throughs?

To increase your adsense income, asses your site for these issues:

How many ads you have on your page? Just one adsense ad, you will get a higher payout, using the max 3 ads will reduce the cpc you get per click.

What type of site and quality of site is your adsense code on? If you have a couple of bad poor quality sites, Google applies smart pricing and you will only get peanuts per click. So remove the adsense from all but the best sites. Your adsense earnings might increase.

What you need to do is test, test, test.

With adsense, it is about more quality content and loads of traffic.
