How do you make money with Social Media

I was alerted to this Perry Belcher video on Social Media. He explains in really well, it is about building a relationship by sharing yourself, not just selling your stuff. Watch this as he does a good job of showing how it all interlinks….. and might eventually lead to some business. Who knows you might make some friends on the way.

How to use social media to market a company in a down economy

I came across this blog post in Mashabale about a meetup that Gary Vee of Wine TV was doing in New York. The most commented statement that he made was that you can make a living with just 2500 uniques a day. So many questions arise from this, what is the average income per unique are you expecting here? Where do you live and how much do you need to live on? Make up your own mind and share your opinion below.

You can watch the video of it here but this is a summary of that talk.

Gary’s 7 Points on a Social Media Upturn

1. “Hustle” – improvise, be resourceful, do whatever it takes to care for your community. Tough times require creative solutions.

2. “Next 24 months are the biggest opportunity for social media” – social media is mature. “It’s a baby. But it’s mature. It’s a baby with a mustache.”

3. “Large companies will cut social media because they don’t understand it” – the longer the big players stay away from new web technologies, the greater the opportunity for new entrants.

4. “The new barrier to building a brand is your time, not your pocketbook” – nobody can stop you from starting a global media brand from your house; all you need is time.

5. “Telling main street about Twitter is a waste of time” – keep it quiet; knowledge of new web technologies is your competitive advantage.

6. “Take Your Money” – go to Google, type in the keywords in your space. Look at the ads next to the results: these are people who pay to market in your niche. Call them. Convince them to spend those dollars on you instead.

7. “Anything that gets eyeballs is monetizable” – 2500 unique visitors a day should be enough to live on.

I found some new micro blogging tools

This week I came across a couple of new tools which can greatly enhance your distribution of content in new ways.

1. The first is Twiddeo which is Twitter with videos. You can upload videos that you have filmed from elsewhere. It is a great new addition to Twitter. Try it out and see how you can make it expand your Twitter influence. It is still in beta so there will probably be some tweaks needed. Also you will need to add the Greasemonkey addon on Firefox to make it work.

2. Mobatalk - Not sure how to describe this service but it is yet another video micro blogging service and it is free as well. The only difference with the above is that you have to film and record the videos on their platform. The great thing about this service is that you can add Twitter tags to each video.

Enjoy! If you have some great new ideas on how to use these new tools, do share.

Do bloggers take free speech too far?

In the last day or so, there has been a lot of air time in the blogging world discussing this war of words between John Reese and a couple of other bloggers Mark Hopkins and Duncan Riley. In Mark’s post entitled “Is Twitter Vulnerable to Marketer Attack?”, he called John Reese a Web 2.0 flopster and prolific e-book salesman. In his post, he suggests that dodgy internet salemen are using Twitter to flood people with offers to sell them their “e-books”. Isn’t twitter a permission based service and you only twit people who have opted in to follow you? If this is so, those people know what to expect when they sign up to follow you, so this is pull marketing.

Sifting through the comments, there are arguments for both sides. You can read it at John’s blog and make up your own mind.

The cynic in me thinks that this whole thing is a great example of creating “Blog Buzz”, a sure fire way to get tons of traffic back to your blog. So more traffic = more revenue. Isn’t that what the crux of the argument is about, abuse of Web2.0 for monetary gain. So moral of the story, bash a name in your niche, get loads of traffic to your monetized blog.
