In the last day or so, there has been a lot of air time in the blogging world discussing this war of words between John Reese and a couple of other bloggers Mark Hopkins and Duncan Riley. In Mark’s post entitled “Is Twitter Vulnerable to Marketer Attack?”, he called John Reese a Web 2.0 flopster and prolific e-book salesman. In his post, he suggests that dodgy internet salemen are using Twitter to flood people with offers to sell them their “e-books”. Isn’t twitter a permission based service and you only twit people who have opted in to follow you? If this is so, those people know what to expect when they sign up to follow you, so this is pull marketing.
Sifting through the comments, there are arguments for both sides. You can read it at John’s blog and make up your own mind.
The cynic in me thinks that this whole thing is a great example of creating “Blog Buzz”, a sure fire way to get tons of traffic back to your blog. So more traffic = more revenue. Isn’t that what the crux of the argument is about, abuse of Web2.0 for monetary gain. So moral of the story, bash a name in your niche, get loads of traffic to your monetized blog.
